Which professional do I need?

...the difference between a redesigner and an interior designer

Do you ever walk around your home and realize several rooms have simply lost their purpose, or perhaps never had one? Have you ever considered hiring an interior designer but didn’t want the associated price tag? Enter the certified home redesigner. Many home owners are unaware that home stagers are also certified to redesign spaces.

Common design principles such as balance, proportion, scale, rhythm, and unity are all necessary design aspects whether staging to sell or redesigning. That being said, there are clear distinctions between a redesigner and an interior designer.

Like an interior designer, a redesigner can address paint choices, furniture, art, or accessory placement to bring a sense of a homeowner’s personal style to a home. We can also shop for home owners and offer trade discounts. More often than not, we try to utilize the home owner’s items.

Interior designers, on the other hand, generally have the necessary education to dive well beyond decorating. An individual with an interior design degree can read blueprints, understand building codes, inspection regulations, and will know how to achieve universal accessibility. Consequently interior designers can, and should, charge according to their level of expertise.

The fees associated with redesign are generally far less than an interior designer BUT we are very capable to address many aspects of design. In fact, several redesigners choose to move on to obtain an interior design degree.

Although there is no formal requirement to become a home stager and redesigner, I highly recommend hiring someone who knows how to market a home through tried and true methods addressed in a reputable training program. Home staging is more than moving furniture around. We must possess the knowledge to strategically stage a home to reach the psyche of a buyer…There truly is a method to our madness!

New homeowners may also benefit greatly from the guidance of a redesigner. Speaking from personal experience, we recently moved from a 2-story traditional home into a ranch. We have become the couple that wants to avoid stairs…the joys of aging!

Trying to make a 2-story furniture layout work in a ranch was like putting together a puzzle with missing pieces. Because this is my profession, I’ve been having a blast with potential furniture layouts but many folks simply want to get settled and move on to more important things.

To conclude, if your house simply needs some added spark and purpose, you may simply need the skills of a trained redesigner. Give me a call today to set something up. I would be thrilled to provide sensible design choices without an interior designer price tag!
